CYCLADES
SIGHTSEEING - SIKINOS
The
cultivation of vineyards flourished since the early years and gave
the island the name of Oini (island of wine).
Its present name
derives from Sykion, son of Oa, the legendary King of limnos.
Excavations brought to light ruins probably belonging to the Pythian
Apollo.
The name of Sikinos
has recently started to become known, yet without any significant
tourist expansion.
Its ground is rocky
and the land is dotted with terraces to avoid soil erosion.
The ship anchors at
Alopronia or Alo Pronia, where you find most of the rooms for rent
and a small beach with clean waters.
Most
of Sikinos' shores are rocky, some unapproachable and others with
rocks eroded by the sea salt. You will find beautiful spots for
swimming at Agios Georgios, Dialiskari and Agios Panteleimonas.
Sikinos' Hora is built
on the edge of a precipice and is still unaffected by tourism. Among
its white houses, the mansions stand out as the best examples of
traditional Cycladic architecture.
Visit the church of
Panagia Pantanassa with its gold coated reredos sculptured in wood
and the fabulous late Byzantine icons.
