CYCLADES
SIGHTSEEING - SERIFOS
According
to mythology the sea washed up Perseas on the shores of Serifos. He
had been put in a box by his mother in order to save him from the
anger of king Akrisios of Argos.
Even through the roots
of the name originate from the word "sterfos" which in
Greek means barren, this rocky island has enough of both water and
vegetation.
When seeing Serifos
from afar, we are impressed by the huge mountainous mass which makes
us think that it’s a rock growing in the middle of the sea.
The beaches with their
golden sand are among the best in the Cyclades, and they are
innumerable, especially in the southern part.
The harbor of Livadi
is the area’s main tourist center. Its extended beach is shaded by
trees among which little taverns and bars are hidden.
Climbing
up to Hora the view becomes pure magic, while the narrow alleys lead
us further up to upper Hora with its picturesque square. The view
embraces the plain and the surrounding sea with its little islands.
Serifo’s Hora is one
of the most fantastic of the Cyclades and is justly characterized as
a traditional settlement. Discover its restored late Byzantine
churches, the small archaeological collection in the neoclassical
building of the town-hall and the ruins of the venetian castle.
Around Serifos are the
islets of Serifopoula and Piperi. From Hora you can see the
islet of Vous (meaning ox) which has the shape of an ox, by
which it got its name.
