CYCLADES
SIGHTSEEING - FOLEGANDEOS
Folegandros' history
does not
differ much from the other Cycladic Islands.
It's
name is etymologically connected to the name Polyandros (meaning
many men) from the
many male shepherds who once inhabited it.
During the years
when the pirates terrified the Aegean, Folegandeos was deserted, only to
be
inhabited again thereafter.
Folegandros is a little rocky island looking more
like a
mountainous mass with a minimum of vegetation and few beaches.
Folegandros' charm
was discovered recently, by Danish and Italian tourists,
who were charmed by the calmness of its landscape, the traditional
architecture of Hora, the wooden balconies and the hospitable
inhabitants.
The ships anchor
at Karavostasi where a small beach is situated and a few rooms are
for rent. By caique or by foot you can get to livadi, an unapproachable
beach with wild
beauty.
From there -and still by caique-
you can reach the cave of Chrysospilia with its impressive stalactites and stalagmites.
The cave was considered a holy site by the ancient inhabitants
of this island.
Don't leave Folegandros before
you have tasted the specialties of Ano Meria (Upper Side): homemade spaghetti
with rooster in tomato sauce. The locals will tell you where you can find
it.
