SIGHTSEEING - ANTIPAROS
Antiparos and Paros
are divided by a narrow channel. The island is notable for its golden,
sandy beaches and for
its authentic natural beauty.
In
ancient times, the island was green, but it seems that some intervening
destruction
of an unknown nature changed all that. Its ancient name was "Σliaros," meaning
forested island.
There are obvious differences between the northern
and southern parts of the island. In the north there are clear indicators
that the island had volcanic activity during the Paleolithic epoch,
giving reasons for the
barreness of the surface.
Antiparos is a famous
island for its gorgeous cave! The cave of Antiparos is one of the
most beautiful caves in Greece. The history of Antiparos can be traced back
to the years of antiquity. Inscriptions and ancient messages on the stalactites,
which witnessed the ancient origin of the cave, vanished in the years, but
even today one can distinguish names of old and recent personalities engraved
on the wall: Marquis de Novandel, Bishop de Gabrie (1673), Othon King of Greece
(1840).
The island is located at the western part of Paros
island and connected via frequent caique (small diesel driven boat).
The island is 34 square kilometers. The tallest peak is Prophet Elia
(at 399 meters altitude)
which is found in the center of the island.
The whitewashed houses,
the flowerful balconies, the churches, the windmills and pebble
roads give to the traveller the experience of a lifetime.
